A short while ago I had Erin from Organizing with Erin come over and evaluate our storage situation.  One thing she suggested was adding a shelf to our bedroom closet.  There were several ways I could go with this suggestion.  The easiest would be to get a board, plop it on some books and call it a day.  But where’s the fun in that.  Instead I decided to build one that would be a little more sturdy in case I ever decided to put something heavier than blankets or shoe boxes on it.

Note:  This post is a work-in-progress.   I’m publishing to meet a deadline but please check back for updates.

Halloween is my favorite holiday and it’s just around the corner.  As a kid, I loved it because free candy and Haunted Houses.  As an adult, I loved it because it was the one time a year a geek like myself could fit in.

Still there is a fine line between sexy and slutty and I’m here to tell you that you can achieve the same results with a sexy costume.  Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with going the slutty route if that is your thing.  You could certainly slut up these choices easily enough.  I’m just positing that you don’t have to.

Chicago Cautiously Optimistic About Cubs going to World Series

I’m writing the following for posterity. As of today, the Chicago Cubs are up 2 to 1 against the St Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. If they win today, they move on to the NLCS. Even if they don’t win today, they have one more chance Thursday in St Louis.

It certainly feels like

  1.  They will win today;
  2.  They will win the NLCS against most likely the New York Mets; and
  3.  They will win the World Series.

BUT…Cubs fans have been here before. There was a big drought between their last World Series appearance in 1945 and even making the playoffs until the 80s. And of course there was the 2003 NLCS and being 4 outs away and losing because of a botched double play and a tired pitcher, not an over zealous fan.

The Story So Far….

We knew the Cubs would be in the playoffs about a week before the regular season ended. That is, it became official. Many fans knew much earlier, like when they swept one of their wild card spot competitors. I was really nervous about a 1 game play-in. Because it would be just our (the fans) luck that the Cubs win 97 games and then lose the one playoff chance like they did in 2007 and 2008.

Let’s talk about those 97 wins. They went on a 8 game winning streak at the end of the RS, beating Pittsburgh to salvage the series, then Kansas City in a make up game, followed by sweeping the Reds and the Brewers. Then they won the play in game against the Pirates (4-0) to advance to the NLDS. At some point during that 8 game streak, there was nothing left to play for. Mathematically they could not catch up to Pittsburgh or St Louis and they would either face the Pirates or the Cardinals in their respective cities. yet they continued to win out, albeit against bottom dweller teams.

Naturally they lost the first game in St Louis, shut out 4-0, just as the Cubs had done to the Pirates.

At that point I knew that if they didn’t take the 2nd game it would be a difficult if not impossible climb to win the series. But they did, 6 – 3. And then they won Game 3. Watching Game 3 there was something about these Cubs players. It didn’t matter that the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead, or that the were one run away at 4-5. Even when they hit a two run homer in the 9th to make it 8-6 you could tell that the players knew they could come back. They didn’t have to of course because of good enough pitching.

That brings us to today…

The game is at 4:30 PM, which means will we know by Must See TV Prime Time whether or not the Cubs advance. My prediction is that if they win today, they go on to win the World Series. If they lose today, but win Game 5, then they go on to win the NLCS but lose the World Series.

Becoming a Parent, Getting It Off Your Chest

Do Twins run in your family

FullSizeRenderThis question seems to be a standard opening I get from a lot of people, many who run the gambit from close friend to virtual stranger.  I usually answer with:

*) They do now.
*) Well they mostly crawl but they are working on walking.

Most people are just trying to make small talk and show some interest in my progeny.  What they may not realize is that this seemingly innocent sentence is sometimes code for “did you use fertility drugs to make babies?”

Some parents are naturally sensitive to such a question for a variety of reasons. Some feel like they are inadequate or inferior because they needed science to make a baby. Spoiler alert: they aren’t either.

Some are up against a religious belief system that frowns upon or absolutely denounces IVF, but they still wanted babies.  I know some devout people who criticize IVF users but make no bones about the birth control they were on in our college years.

Some don’t want to deal with the sanctimonious asshats who will say it isn’t natural. Neither is the car I drove to work or the highway I used to get there.

And some people didn’t use fertility drugs but they know that if they mention that they will come off as assclowns looking down on those who did use science or that no one will believe them anyway so what’s the point.

I am certainly not trying to right a PSA here and tell people not to ask that question.  By all means, ask away.  I think it helps alleviate whatever stigma exists about IVF and infertility.  But I just thought it might be helpful to let you know why this question might be met with anything from a pregnant pause to a blank stare.

Pope Francis met with Kim Davis: So Fucking What

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Pope Francis met Kim Davis at the Vatican Embassy during his stay in Washington.  To which I say, in the words of John Belushi:  “BIG….Deal!”

A lot of people are disappointed that this meeting occurred and worry that it is  an implicit endorsement for Kim Davis and her stand against same-sex marriage.  To be sure, many liberals were disappointed when the Pope  was asked about public officials refusing to carry out their duties as a matter conscience, he said:

“I can’t have in mind all cases that can exist about conscientious objection,” the Pope answered. “But, yes, I can say the conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right.”

Asked whether that right also applies to government officials, Francis said:”It is a human right, and if a government official is a human person, he has that right. It is a human right.”   CNN

The Pope met with lots of people during his visit to Washington, New York, and Philadelphia.  If it is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it (Aristotle) than it should follow that meeting with someone doesn’t sanction their actions or beliefs.

I know a lot of liberals got a progressive chubby when they heard that Pope Francis pleaded with Congress to abolish the death penalty.  But the pope also touched on conservative porn staples, suggesting traditional marriage was under attack and calling for the protection of “human life at every stage of development.”

What exactly would you expect the Leader of the Roman Catholic Church – a entity that believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and only between a man and woman  — to say?   The prelate of Roman Catholicism still believes the basic doctrines of the Catholic Church teachings regarding homosexual conduct, abortion, women’s ordination, or birth control.

None of this is inconsistent or flip-flopping.  Since he took office, Pope Francis has reminded his followers the Catholic Church must shake off an obsession with teachings on abortion, contraception and homosexuality and instead focus on the greater need to make The Church a merciful, more welcoming place for all.  That those issues comprise only a small part of the belief system of Catholicism as defined by the scriptures and the teachings of the church over time.  The Pope has made clear his belief that the church needs to shift its focus, become more inclusive, and pick their battles more diligently.

Apparently he gave Davis a rosary, which she in turn gave to her parents, lifelong Catholics.  Kim Davis is an Apostolic Christian after a religious conversion four and a half years ago.  Side note: some Christians sects don’t consider Catholics to be Christians and don’t recognize the prelate of Roman Catholicism as anything beyond a guy in a big hat.

According to Davis, the Pope told her to Stay Strong.  She isn’t the first person the pontiff has said this to on this trip.  In fact, he says it so often it’s like his catch phrase.   Just like when Sheldon Cooper says Bazinga!

More importantly, it is what he didn’t say.  While he may have encouraged Davis to Stay Strong and advocates conscientious objection, he did not go so far as to suggest that conscientious objection should override civil duty of elected officials.  Besides, the branches of government in this country are Executive, Legislative and Judicial; we don’t have a Papal branch yet.
